October 1999 TPC Summary
Building a Computer and Hardware Upgrades
About 9 tpc members met at VCN on Monday, October 25 at 7pm to see just what's in a computer. President Mike Kato pounded together a nice little box with the help of Sajjad, letting us know where those motherboards, hard drives, chips, cables and cards go. A good rule of thumb learned was add and hook up components one at a time. That way, if there are problems, you can find the cause easier.
I was off to the side adding memory (they just clip in) and a bigger hard drive to my laptop. Actual physical installations were pretty straightforward. Formatting the disk using fdisk in DOS was more complicated, but it offers a menu system that is not hard too follow once you get the idea. In my case, I had to delete the current partitions that existed on the disk, then create and format new partitions. I will not go into the details here, but it went relatively smoothly thanks to the local know-how, Sajjad in this case. After having been there and done that... with help, I believe I could manage on my own next time. And that is the point of these workshops.
